Apple's Foldable Sold Out in Thirty Minutes. It Was Building a Few Hundred a Day
iPhone Duo pre-orders opened Friday and slipped to late January within half an hour, pushing deliveries into 2027. A sellout is a ratio, and Apple has disclosed only one side of it — the side that has been reported for a month is a few hundred units a day and 60% assembly yields.
MAI
Apple opened iPhone Duo pre-orders at 5 a.m. Pacific on Friday. Within about thirty minutes every configuration in the United States showed a delivery estimate of January 25, with some buyers seeing January 29. In-store pickup for the October 23 launch day disappeared entirely. The obvious headline — Apple's first foldable sold out in minutes — is the wrong one.
A sellout is a ratio, and Apple has disclosed only one side of it. The company has never said how many iPhone Duos it had to sell. The other side has been on the record for a month, and it is unusually small.
The supply constraint was documented before pre-orders opened
Nikkei Asia reported in September that early iPhone Duo output was running at a few hundred units a day, with Apple prioritising quality over volume. That is not a normal iPhone ramp; it is closer to a pilot line.
The reasons were reported separately. Jiemian News, citing a person close to Foxconn's supply chain, said final assembly yields were only slightly above 60% as of September 17 — meaning roughly four in ten units coming off the line were not shippable. Samsung Display's foldable OLED panels and the hinge assembly both had low yields, late deliveries and design changes, which left Foxconn less time to tune its line before launch.
Analyst Jeff Pu cut his 2026 iPhone Duo shipment estimate from 7 million units to 6 million, and attributed the cut to the hinge rather than to demand. For scale, he expects 72 million iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units this year — about twelve times the foldable.
So the January ship dates are consistent with two completely different worlds: enormous demand meeting adequate supply, or ordinary demand meeting almost none. Nothing published this week distinguishes between them.
What $1,999 buys
| Storage | US price |
|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 |
| 512GB | $2,199 |
| 1TB | $2,599 |
| 2TB | $3,199 |
The Duo has a 5.4-inch front display and a 7.6-inch inner screen, a nano-texture finish Apple says reduces glare and disguises the crease, ultrawide and wide rear cameras with no telephoto, and a FaceTime camera under the main display. It ships October 23 in the United States and more than 70 other countries, with 28 more following on October 30. Colours are Star White and Night Sky.
The resale market responded as it always does to a thin launch: pre-orders appeared on eBay within hours at asking prices as high as $5,200. Scalping is a signal about scarcity, not about underlying demand — it is the predictable output of a sold-out queue, however short that queue was.
The financial stake is smaller than the attention
At 6 million units and a $1,999 average — generous, since the entry tier is the cheapest of four — the Duo is roughly $12 billion of revenue. Against the $209.6 billion Apple booked from iPhone in fiscal 2025, that is about 6% of the iPhone line. It matters more at the margin: consensus has Apple going from roughly $478 billion in fiscal 2026 to $528 billion in fiscal 2027, and $12 billion is a meaningful slice of that $50 billion of growth. But some share of it is not incremental at all, because a portion of Duo buyers would have bought an iPhone 18 Pro otherwise.
That is the context in which the hinge problem matters. Apple's constraint is not that nobody wants a foldable. It is that every Duo it cannot assemble is either a deferred sale or a substituted one, and the substitution lands inside Apple's own line-up.
The first real number arrives November 2
Apple reports fiscal Q4 results on November 2. That quarter contains no Duo sales at all, so the figure to read is the December-quarter guidance and, more than that, what management says about the constraint. If the company guides conservatively and talks about ramping yields, the supply reading is correct. If it guides high, it is telling you it expects the line to be fixed.
There is precedent for both. The iPhone X shipped into a supply crunch in 2017 and still produced a record quarter. But Apple has also spent this autumn trimming elsewhere: it reportedly cut iPhone 18 Pro orders by 15–20%, which is a demand signal pointing the other way on the same product line.
For now, the honest description of Friday is narrow. Apple's first foldable found more buyers in thirty minutes than it had units to sell. Given that it was building a few hundred a day, that was close to guaranteed before the store opened.
